In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson, at the urging of Anna Jarvis and her Mother’s Day International Association, officially established the 2nd Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
It wasn’t long after the first official Mother’s Day, which was the day set aside for mother’s to be honored by their families, became commercialized. Florists, card companies and other merchandisers began to capitalize on the popular holiday much to Anna Jarvis’ dismay.
As hard as Anna Jarvis tried to change Mother’s Day back to a day that a mother’s loved ones honored her in their own personal way it never happened.
Mother’s Day lives on as the over the top commercial holiday that we all love!
I hope that all the mothers reading this have enjoyed through the years many hand crafted cards, the flowers and special meals prepared by big and small loved ones.
Also, I hope that all you loved ones out there make the day special for the mother in your life.
