With Spring beginning to poke its head up with warmer temperatures and longer daylight, it’s time to think about what projects around the house need some attention. I like to make a list of general areas and then go deeper into each. That way it does not seem to be as overwhelming to me! I want to share with you how I start by sorting through the ideas/ updating and “stuff” that I have collected over the past few months. If I do this now and write it on a calendar I am more likely to call the people needed and get on their list early!
Smoke and CO2 detectors: Check/test all the alarms. First on the list and easiest to check off as completed!
Garage: Collect the cardboard for recycling Put away winter paraphernalia Get the gardening tools ready for use. Wash the floor to get rid of all the salt from the car over the winter. Anything out of place?
Landscaping: In the yard…. What died or was eaten over the winter? (We lost 7 arborvitae to the deer this winter!) What flourishes? What doesn’t? Do I want a color change in blooming plants?
Yard: Rodent damage? Repair/ replace sod? (Voles are busy all winter!) Fertilize early with weed/feed to keep ahead of weeds. Spread grass seed in those “thin” areas
Fences: Walk around - what needs repair/ replacement?
Patio: Any broken pavers/ blocks/bricks? Spray with pre-emergent weed killer.
Roof: Any discoloration? Or leaks visible inside the house? Any missing shingles? Any branches/ leaves/ debris in the valleys, eaves, or gutters?
Driveway: New Cracks? Is it time to re-seal the asphalt? Schedule early.
Painting: Any peeling/ or blistering on the siding or trim? Do the windows need to be re-caulked?
Window washing: Schedule for mid-May to mid-June
Kitchen: Anything that needs updating? Clean the pantry - get rid of stale crackers, etc. Mark the new boxes/bags with the date they were opened. Clean the garbage disposal
Baths: Clean drains in the sinks/ showers/ tubs. Does the grout around the tub/shower need replacing?
I guess if we can make ourselves get a jump start on the things that need to be done around the house now we can look forward to enjoying the beautiful summer days ahead.
